Leacock's Context

To better understand this story, it is important to remember that it was written in 1911 by a Canadian professor of political economy at McGill University, who is actually better known for his humorous and satirical writings. Stephen Leacock, who might be called a dystopian, had serious doubts about his opposites—the utopians, who tended to paint rosy pictures of the world's future and believed that human wisdom would give us happy solutions to all our problems. Leacock did not share the beautiful dreams of the utopians. He did not believe machines, industrialization, and scientific and technological developments can automatically lead us to a paradise on Earth. Like George Orwell's 1984 and Animal Farm, The Man in Asbestos paints humanity's future in darkly pessimistic colors.

The Double-Edged Sword of Progress

Freedom, equality, progress, longevity, science, machines — these are all good things, but we do not always know what they really mean. And we often forget that they can all be double-edged swords.

Perfection Means the End of Change

Perfection is not only impossible, it is also undesirable, because 'perfection' means the end of change, and the end of change means the end of progress. And that would be the worst problem for human beings.

The Road to Hell Is Paved with Good Intentions

Tremendous human sufferings in history have been caused by those who often sincerely try to make things better. History has told us how important it is to guard against utopians.

Different Definitions of Paradise

The 'new society' presented by Leacock is considered a paradise by the Man in Asbestos. The problem is: People do not have the same definition of the word 'paradise'.
